THE PRACTITIONER

Dawn Clow is an Equine Body Worker who provides a holistic therapy that supports you and your horse through informed analysis and the practical utilization of therapeutic sports massage incorporating acupressure and Reiki as and when appropriate.

Her work primarily targets musculoskeletal problems in horses, qualifying with an Equine Sports Massage Course, that included applied anatomy, subjective conformation and gait analysis, an introduction to dental issues, and an introduction to saddle fitting issues.

Dawn trained initially as a human massage therapist and aromatherapist through VTCT and has maintained this practice alongside qualifying as a level one Reiki practitioner.

Dawn is able to offer a treatment that incorporates, soft tissue manipulation, stretching exercises, advice on future rehabilitation programs and every day management issues as well as behavioural problems.

WHAT IS EQUINE SPORTS MASSAGE

Equine Sports massage is the therapeutic application of professional sports massage techniques applied to the horse. A thorough understanding of anatomy and the interaction of bones, joints and muscles are the basis of the proven physical and mental therapy that is the art of massage. Stress point therapy consists of 84 points throughout the body. When the stress point is addressed the horse may have a pain reaction indicating that there is an issue in that specific area. The pain can be alleviated by direct pressure, cross fiber friction, and massage strokes.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A BODY WORK SESSION

Once you contact me to schedule a massage session; I will interview you briefly over the phone about your reasons for deciding on body work for your horse and timetable your Equine Body Work Session. When I meet with you and your horse I provide a full assessment of the horses conformation, range of motion and analyze its gaits.

A thorough past and present history will be sought; I will usually then work on your horse for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. I always discuss with you what I have discovered during the massage. The session often ends with a demonstration of any appropriate stretches or massage strokes you can incorporate into your horse's routine. You will be provided with a copy of the analysis paperwork.  A schedule at this time can be discussed to support your horse’s needs.

I am the holistic eyes that link and strengthen your horses support team of professionals, by providing a skilful assessment of your horse’s muscular fitness. I use my hands to facilitate a preventative treatment.

I have the expertise working with horses in various disciplines.

As an equine body worker I can work side by side with you as and when appropriate.

A horse needs to be balanced and as a working machine needs to enable itself to coordinate its joints, muscles through its tendons to facilitate its gaits and therefore its movements.

As a trainer would retrain the horse to perform to his best, I retrain the horse’s muscles to perform to their best.

Veterinary Permission - As an EBW I am aware of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 to protect the welfare of sick and injured animals from treatment by unqualified persons that makes it illegal for anyone other than a qualified veterinary surgeon to diagnose an ailment or prescribe treatment. Prior permission from the veterinarian usually responsible for the animal must be obtained before body work can commence. Massage is never a replacement for proper veterinary care.
